Color me surprised 2nd edition

Since yesterday the Internet's been abuzz with Donald Rumsfeld's now infamous Pentagon papers, a series of victorious pictures from the Iraq war adorned with biblical quotes and hand-delivered daily to then President, George Walker Bush. The unsettling images have been published, quite surprisingly, by Gentleman Quaterly (GQ), a men ''s fashion magazine! Aptly titled "And He Shall Be Judged", the article presents such gems as "the statue of Saddam Hussein being pulled down in Firdos Square, a grateful Iraqi child kissing an American soldier, and jubilant crowds thronging the streets of newly liberated Baghdad, and above these images, and just below the headline secretary of defense, a quote that may have raised some eyebrows. It came from the Bible, from the book of Psalms: “Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him…To deliver their soul from death.”" (To see the wonderful Bush-administration art craft, feel free to visit GQ.com’s slideshow).

Quite shockingly, not, Mr Dapper tells us that the mixing of Crusades-like messaging with war imagery had become routine. So much so that, "[o]n March 31, a U.S. tank roared through the desert beneath a quote from Ephesians: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”" As a Huffington Post commenter put it, it really seems like it was a matter of "my bogey man friend is better than your bogey man friend".In other words, some good old-fashioned religious war with righteous zealots on both sides. I guess this kind of proves that Kentuck had it exactly right and that it was God's crusade America has been pursuing all these years.

I first came in contact with them, yesterday, through Franck Rich's column in the New York Times on why "Obama can't turn the page on Bush". "Until, he wrote, there is true transparency and true accountability, revelations of that unresolved eight-year nightmare will keep raining down drip by drip" citing the GQ piece authored by none other than Robert Draper, authorized George W. Bush biographer. Today, radio host  Allison Kilkenny wrote a quite interesting piece on how Rumsfeld was Bush's Rasputin. "If you want to read a really crazy article, she urges us, hop over to Robert Draper's article in GQ." As you already know, we did and, yes, it's crazy. Like in insane mind blowing creepy crazy. What was it Voltaire said about believing in absurdities? That it would make you commit atrocities, right? I guess this proves his point.

I assume this was done for fun. I doubt Rumsfeld, Cheney and Rice cared much about the Bible, but I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not poor old Bush Jr was clued in to the joke. Heads of state have been reported to say how puzzled they were by the fact that the former American president really did believe he was doing God's will. In which case, I officially feel bad for Bush and how he allowed himself to be fooled because he sincerely believed that's what his imaginary friend wanted. As a fellow human being, I can't help but feel sad, and quite sorry actually, for him.

Still, I applaud the Bush administration for using propaganda on itself. This is some never seen before act that is sure to make history.

good old-fashioned religious war with righteous zealots on both sides!
